Ready to explore more this year? Same. The chain of events happening in our economy lately has made me want to seek out a magic carpet and fly anywhere but where I reside — New York. Now more than ever is an awesome time to start manifesting new destinations to add to your travel repertoire.

This article is about learning how to set realistic and exciting travel goals for 2025 to turn your wanderlust into action.

Introduction:

First, let me start by wishing you a Happy Belated New Year.

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on past adventures and dream about future journeys. We’re only in February. Therefore, I think it’s safe to embrace that we are still in a new year. This means this article has found you for a reason. It’s your sign to start thinking of what you’d like to immerse yourself in for 2025.

If you could be anywhere, where would you go?

Whether you’re chasing breathtaking views, cultural experiences, or a simple relaxing getaway, setting travel goals can help you make those dreams a reality.

At the beginning of each year, on the first page of my new annual journal, I write down all of the countries and adventures I’d like to experience in a new year. Sometimes I have a particular experience in mind, and I pick a country to visit according to the adventure.

Together, let’s explore how to set meaningful and achievable travel goals to ensure YOU make the most of YOUR adventures this year.

1. Reflect on Your Past Travel Experiences

Taking a step back to reflect is sometimes the best way to start. Travel and the laws of healing go hand in hand.

You can begin by taking stock of where you’ve been. Ask yourself:
• Which destinations made you happiest?
• What kind of experiences do you want more of—nature, history, food, or adventure?
• What lessons did you learn about your travel style and preferences?

Reflecting on these will help you set goals that align with your travel aspirations. What’s being advertised on social media should be a tool you use after self-reflecting on what it is you want. Don’t get caught up in trying to keep up with someone else’s travel esthetic, remember this travel journey is about being self-indulgent. It’s about making sure you take care of yourself.

2. Dream Big, but Stay Realistic

I know it’s exciting to dream of traveling the world in one year but consider your budget, time, and priorities. My first solo trip ever was to Miami, Florida from New York City. I hopped a greyhound, traveled to South Beach, and stayed in a hostel for a week. It’s what my college budget could afford at the time.

Create a list of dream destinations, then break them into smaller, achievable goals. For example:
• Short-term: Plan a weekend getaway to a nearby city, like I did to Miami.
• Long-term: Save for a bucket-list trip, like a safari in South Africa or a wine tour in Stellenbosch.

3. Prioritize Experiences Over Destinations

This is a big one. You have to ask your body, what are you in the mood to experience this year? Instead of focusing solely on where you want to go, consider what you want to experience.

Can I suggest some ideas please:
• Learn a new skill, like cooking authentic Cuban dishes in Cuba.
• Immersing yourself in nature by hiking in Patagonia.
• Exploring coffee or tea farms in different countries (a must for coffee/tea lovers!).

This mindset opens up a world of possibilities beyond your typical bucket list.

4. Budget and Save Intentionally

Travel doesn’t have to break the bank. Say that again to yourself. Travel can be a very affordable lifestyle. Start by creating a travel fund and setting aside money regularly.

Some tips to save for your goals include:
• Using travel reward programs or credit cards to earn points, like the Chase Sapphire card.
• Cutting back on non-essential expenses. Sis, you can dine out in Greece, cook your meals at home for now, and leave the fast food alone.
• Try to book flights and accommodations during off-peak seasons to get good deals.

5. Create a Travel Vision Board

I can’t live without my travel vision board. TBH, I have a world map poster in my bedroom.

Visualizing your goals can make them feel attainable. Create a vision board with photos of dream destinations, travel quotes, and your itinerary ideas. Pinterest is also my go-to for ideas. Not only does this serve as motivation, but it also keeps your goals front and center throughout the year. I eat, sleep travel.

6. Stay Organized with a Travel Plan

Break your travel goals into actionable steps:
• Decide on specific dates for your trips. ( remember to try to travel during off seasons)
• Research visa requirements, costs, and local experiences.
• Create a content plan if you’re sharing your travels online (like TikTok videos or blogs).

Apps like Google Maps, Notion, and Skyscanner can help streamline your planning process. I’m a Skyscanner girly.

Conclusion:

This year, our motto is “Catch flights, not feelings”.

Let your travel goals be more than just dreams. With a clear plan, a bit of budgeting, and a lot of inspiration, you can make this your most adventurous year yet.

Set the date, hun, start planning, and get ready to explore the world—one destination at a time.
